Saudi Arabia’s Green Riyadh Project

To tackle environmental challenges and enhance the quality of life in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is embarking on an ambitious initiative known as the Green Riyadh project.

This groundbreaking effort, part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, seeks to convert the desert capital into a green paradise.

Central to the project’s mission is planting 7.5 million trees across Riyadh.

This extensive greenery aims to beautify the cityscape, improve air quality, and reduce temperatures, providing much-needed relief from the scorching desert heat.

The initiative aims to create cooler microclimates and promote biodiversity by strategically placing trees in gardens, parks, mosques, schools, and along streets.

Launched in March 2019, Green Riyadh represents a cornerstone of Vision 2030, a comprehensive plan to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

Alongside other major projects like King Salman Park, Sports Boulevard, and Riyadh Art, Green Riyadh underscores the kingdom’s commitment to sustainable urban development despite challenges faced by similar initiatives in the past.

The project’s scope is vast, and its estimated cost is approximately 86 billion Saudi riyals (approximately £18 billion).

Funding will support establishing a new irrigation network that utilizes recycled water, ensuring efficient water use across the city.

According to the Riyadh Royal Commission, which oversees the project, Green Riyadh is positioned as “one of the most ambitious urban forestation projects in the world.”

By 2030, the city aims to be transformed into a green oasis, setting a global benchmark for sustainable urban planning and environmental stewardship.

Through initiatives like Green Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is redefining its urban landscape and setting a precedent for sustainable development on a global scale.

As the project progresses, its impact on Riyadh’s environment and community resilience will resonate far beyond the kingdom’s borders.
